You can also look at all the careers and just see what peaks your interest.  The careers have education level required.  Some of the careers are noted that criminal records may prohibit employment.  That does not mean a record will stop you.  Sometimes it could even help.  For example some of the best substance abuse counselors are those in recovery.  That education cannot be book-learned.  Just check out your limitations before proceeding so you know where you will land.

As long as you are looking for a job to get an income, you can apply to places that you chose for you career path.  The nice thing about job searching this way is that a job will give you experience in your chosen field.  It will also give you a reason for wanting to work with a certain employer.  And employers want employees that are interested in the work.  Your goal may include finding a mentor or furthering education part-time.  If you are able to work in your chosen field, you’ll be able to meet like-minded people and the focus will change. Common interests will be common discussion and your network will begin with meeting new people and discovering what you do and don’t want to do in the field.  A handicap that once felt like a mountain will look like a pebble.

Step 1: Action Plan

The next step is to create an Action Plan. Below is an example.

• Talk with several people working as chefs.
• Volunteer to help for a couple of days at no pay to see if you enjoy work and still want to pursue that career. Many people graduate from school only to find out that can’t stand their field.
• Know that your goal is worth working for and what you would love to do. Then say to yourself, “I am a Head Chef.” How does that feel? So so? Great? Go for it. Suddenly, peeling potatoes is not so bad.
• Get an entry-level job in a restaurant.
• Read cookbooks. Practice making new recipes at home.
• Work on a Culinary Arts degree on a part-time registration.

Step 2 – Evaluate

Before proceeding to Step 3, make sure you want to pursue this career.  Now is the time to check out a Choice 2 or 3 career if not happy with Choice 1.  A minimal amount of time and effort has been spent so far.  You may have found out that you really don’t like this field.  Job Change happens all the time.  The sooner you recognize it, the sooner you can change gears and check out the next option.  If this is still your passion, proceed to Step 3.

Step 3 – The upgraded 2nd job

The 2nd job is often easier than the first.  You now have experience, have a professional network and know more about the direction you want to head.  You will make more money and your network will increase.  Maybe a specialty has caught your eye which amounts to job happiness.  Still feel like a beginner?  Don’t.  Congratulations.  Many, maybe most, do not make it to where you are right now professionally and that is – Happy with self employment jobs.
